Anorexia

Specialised Mediation or Mindfulness Training for Anorexia.

The Big Picture…

A few minutes each day with Specialised Meditation for Anorexia can Significantly Reduce the Fear of Eating and the Urges to Starve yourself.
It Can Also Stop the Anxiety and Depression Associated with Anorexia.

Over 1,000 research studies prove: “Meditation is the most powerful way to create changes in the mind, brain and body…”

Anorexia is a ‘dis-ease’ associated with extremely negative self-believes, self-hate and self-denial. All these result in guilt, anger, unrealistic expectations of perfection, false sense of humility, fear of change or making mistakes, depression and phobias.

As long as a person holds on to these negative beliefs – her/his anorexia thrives. When the self- believes start to change to more positive and less critical – anorexia subsides.

How does self- beliefs get formed?

Anorexic self-beliefs get formed at a very young age (although anorexia usually begins in adolescent period or even later on in life). These critical self-believes come as a result of a strict parental attitude, too high parental expectation, any emotional or physical trauma experienced during childhood and/or  absence of true Unconditional Love in the family.

Anorexia can basically start from anything that is perceived (by the sufferer) to be a trauma. It doesn’t have to be something major- it can be a small thing but recognised as hurtful to that person.

Jenny’s Story

You see Jenny was a young swimmer and she was a budding champion holding many swimming titles for her age and even a couple from above her age: she was good. Then one day while training in the gym to strengthen her muscles she tripped over a weight and broke her ankle badly requiring an operation to fix it.

Jenny was devastated because she had a State title swim meet in a months’ time and she had to pull out. It took her over 3 months to get back to swimming. Of course Jenny over that time could do no training or exercise and put on quite a few pounds (kilos).

When she returned to start swimming, her coach said on seeing her, that she was a bit overweight and would have to do something about it. To the coach this was just an observation but to Jenny it was a huge deal, as it came from a person in authority who she respected.

Jenny started going on a diet as the words her coach had said kept going around and around in her young mind and eventually she lost her weight and was swimming fast again. This may seem a good place to end the story and I wish it was; but unfortunately Jenny had programmed her subconscious mind and now believed that eating meant getting fat and not being able to swim fast: so she stopped eating.

Jenny then developed a full blown case of anorexia that she could not stop and soon she was too weak to swim and had to give it up. So a promising career and a possible Olympic champion were lost to anorexia all through the careless words of her coach. Obviously her emotional threshold was low and she was just too sensitive especially in regards to her body, self-esteem and self-love.

Jenny battled her anorexia for over 10 years, in and out of hospital clinics and years of therapy which simply did not work. It was only when Jenny started doing mindfulness training meditation and attacked the anorexia where it lived, in the subconscious mind, that she was finally able to beat the anorexia.

What Actually Happened to Jenny.

You see what happened to Jenny was – she built a set of faulty self-beliefs (obsession) about her body image and food. The coaches words pushed her emotional threshold lower and she developed a severe case of anorexia as a result of it.

She used child logic to build her new faulty beliefs:  food = getting fat = swimming slower = not feeling good and the remedy for it – stop eating.

You see self-beliefs are very powerful and can change who you are very fast by re-programming the brain; and like in Jenny’s case it can be as simple as being told she had to lose weight.

Jenny had an underlying self-belief that if she ate, she would not be able to swim fast, so she did not eat.

Mindfulness Training (specialised meditation) clears the mind from former conditioning.

Jenny programmed herself into her anorexia using her feelings and emotions. She had a choice of thinking positive or negative but because she was a perfectionist she perceived things only one way – critically negative. This then ultimately led to her anorexia.

Practicing mindfulness training (Specialised Meditation) helped her erase the messages anorexia installed in her mind and replace them with more positive and constructive ones.

The only way to change these devastating self-beliefs is to start practicing mindful awareness. And this is what our Specialised Meditation for Anorexia is for.

Specialised Meditation for Anorexia changes the brain structure.

The brain of an anorexic works differently from the brain of healthy people because the excessive weight loss occurs from all human tissues, including the brain. The good news is that most of these changes can be reversed and healed.

The first condition for healing is restoring the body weight. The second condition is learning to be mindful. Mindfulness is a very specific type of awareness in which you learn to be the observer of your thoughts and emotions as they arise in your mind. In this way you establish a conscious relationship with the contents of your mind.

It is the art of listening without judging and is about being completely present in every moment of life.

What happens inside your brain when you are mindful?

When the brain works, it generates electrical impulses that fluctuate rhythmically in distinct pattern called brain wave patterns.

This pattern are closely correlated with your thoughts, your emotions, your state of being, the functioning of the various systems of your body and in essence,

…the entire quality of your life!

Let’s look at the different brain waves patterns.

The most rapid is beta brain wave pattern, the pattern of normal waking consciousness, arousal, alertness, logic and cognition. At its highest most rapid levels, though, beta is associated with anxiety, disharmony, and dis-ease (anorexia and other).

Perhaps the ability to slow yourself down from those levels might be beneficial to you?

As you become more relaxed, your brain wave activity slows into what is called an alpha brain wave pattern.

Alpha state vary from deep alpha, a state of deep relaxation often referred to as the twilight state between sleep and walking, to the higher end of alpha – a more focused yet still very relaxed state.

And it is where the mindfulness state is – in the alpha brain waves patterns.

Slower still are theta waves.

Theta is best known as the brain wave pattern of dream sleep. But it’s also associated with a number of other beneficial states, including mediation, stress relief,  “Ah-ha” moments and super learning.

The slowest brain wave pattern is called delta.

Delta is the brain wave pattern of dreamless sleep. Generally people are asleep in delta, but there is evidence that it is possible to remain alert in this state – a very deep, trance-like, non-physical state you’ll have to experience to appreciate.

Beta (15 – 40 cycles per second) = Conscious (thinking, rationalizing). Higher levels associated with anxiety, unease, feelings of separation, fight or flight. Anorexic brain works on high level of beta waves most of the time.

Alpha
(9 – 14 cycles per second) = Sub-conscious (relaxation, super learning, relaxed focus, light trance, increased serotonin production and other pleasure brain chemicals).

Theta(5 – 8 cycles per second) = deep Sub-conscious (deep meditation, direct access to the subconscious mind, dreaming sleep, increased production of pleasure brain chemicals, increased learning and memory, increased creativity.)

Delta (1.5 – 4 cycles per second) = very deep Sub-conscious (coma, dreamless sleep, Human growth hormone released). It is associated with deep, trance-like, non-physical state, loss of body awareness, access to unconscious and “collective unconscious” mind.

What does Mindfulness Training mean?

Mindfulness Training means bringing your complete attention to the present moment without being destructed with anything else (food, body image, past experiences or other fantasies).  Mindfulness is to be aware of your mind and body.

It is having a connection with all your feelings and emotions, good or bad and accepting them.  It is recognising who you really are every single moment by observing the content of your mind.

Specialized Meditation (or Mindfulness Training) will help you to:

Watch your thoughts, they become words.
Watch your words, they lead to actions.
Watch your actions, they create habits.
Watch your habits, they build your character.
Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.
